FRP composites continue to find broad usage in automotive markets. While the choice of fiber and polymeric matrix play an important role in the performance of the final composite, many times the sizing – the material that provides the adhesion between the fiber and polymer – is overlooked. The choice of ingredients that make up the final sizing formulation can improve mechanical properties, chemical and hydrolysis resistance and many other performance attributes. Protection of the fiber during production and providing optimized adhesion to the matrix of the composite are two of the primary functions of the sizing. This presentation will discuss how sizing emulsions and binders are being used to make better products.
